How This Method Works

1st time: Read once and words and phrases that you don't know. DON'T look up any words in the dictionary. I suggest you use a bright marker, red or arange, and make the words stick out as much as possible.

2nd and 3rd times: Read two more times, but DON'T look up any words yet. The purpose at this stage is to discover new words that you don't know. Again, circle any words and phrases you don't know.

4th time: Read once more and double-circle the words that bother you. You should think about the meaning of each word each time you read. Try to guess the meaning based on the context and then look up the words that you have double circied.

5th, 6th and 7th times: Read three more times(aloud if possible). This time, focus more on meaning. Don't stop reading even if you wonder about the word that you circled once.

After you've finished the section or page, go back and look the unknown words up - if they bother you.

8th, 9th and 10th times: Read the passage three more times to youself at 200 words per minute. This is the speed that fast speakers speak at. If you can read at this speed, it will help your listening skills.

One more step: After one month or a couple of months, re-read what you have previously read. It will refresh your memory and help you to learn those and sentence structures even better.

KEATING : Well, come on.

He gestures them to follow and the students, after some hesitation, grab their books and follow Keating out into the main entranceway.

BOYS : (murmuring and chattering) Let's go. Let's go, guys.

14. INT.ENTRANCEWAY -DAY

Keating stands before the school's trophy cabinets and waits until all the boys arrive.                                     He continues whistling.

KEATING : "Oh Captain, My Captain." Who knows where that comes from? Anybody?

Todd looks up as if he knows the answer, but says nothing. Cough. Spaz blows his nose a little too close to Meeks for his liking.

KEATING : Not a clue? It's from poem by Walt Whitman about Mr.Abraham Lincoln. Now in his class you can call me Mr.Keating. Or, if you're slightly more daring, "Oh Captain,My Captain"

The students laugh slightly.

*poke: 찌르다.구멍으내다,내밀다 / gesticulate: (몸짓)이야기하다 n.gesture / blow : 불다 / blow one's nose: 코풀다. 폭파하다(up)

KEATING : Now let me dispel a few rumors so they don't fester into facts. Yes, I too attended Hell-ton and I survived. And no, at the time I was not the mental giant you see before you.I was the intellectual equivalent of a ninety-eight pound weakling. I would go to the beach and people would kick copies of Byron in my face.

The boys laugh once again, while Carmen, obviously trying to write all this down, looks around confusedly. Keating looks down at papers in his hand.

KEATING : Now, Mr.Petts. That's a rather unfortunate name. Mr.Pitts, where are you?

Pitts raises his hand while everyone around him snickers.

KEATING : Mr.Pitts, would you open your hymnal to page 542 and read the first stanza of the poem you find there?

All the boys open their books.

PITTS : "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time?"

Some boys around him chuckle.

KEATING : Yes, that's the one. Somewhat appropriate, isn't it?

* fester:(상처)곪다.악화되다/ a mental giant: 걸출한 지성인 / equivalent : 등가의, 동등한 / weakling : 허약자,약골 * snicker : 숨죽여 웃다.

PITTS : "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may, old time is still a-flying. And this same flower that smiles today, tomorrow will be dying."

KEATING : Thank you. Mr.PITTS."Gather ye rosebuds while ye may." The Latin term for that sentiment is "Carpe Diem." Now, who knows what that means?

Meeks immediately puts his hand up.

MEEKS : Carpe Diem. That's "Seize the Day."

KEATING : Very good, Mr...

MEEK : Meeks.

KEATING : Meeks. Another unusual name. Seize the day. "Gather ye rosebuds while ye may." Why does the writer use these lines?

CHARLIE : Because he's in a hurry.

KEATING : No, ding!

Keating slams his hand down on an imaginary buzzer.

KEATING : Thank you for playing anyway. Because we are food for worms, lads. Because, believe it or not, each and every one of us in this room is one day going to stop breathing, turn cold, and die.

Keating turns towards the trophy cases, filled with trophies, footballs, and team pictures.

*ye: 너희들 / lad:소년,청년 / my lad : 제군들 / turn cold : 싸늘히 식다

KEATING : I would like you yo step forward over here and peruse some of the faces from the past. You've walked past them many times. I don't think you've really looked at them.

The students slowly gather round the cases, looking at the old photographs and Keating moves behind them.

KEATING : They're not that different from you, are they? Sam haircuts. Full of homones, just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster. They believe they're destined for great things, just like many of you. Their eyes are full of hope, just like you. Did they wait until it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable? Because you see, gentleman, these boys are now fertilizing daffodils. But if you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on, lean in. Listen. Do you hear it?

The boys lean in and Keating over Cameron's shoulder.

KEATING : (whisphering in a gruff voice) Carpe.

Cameron looks over his shoulder with an aggravated expression on his face.

KEATING : Hear it? (whisphering again) Carpe. Carpe Diem. Sieze the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.

* peruse:정독하다.읽다 / ful of hurmones: 호르몬으로 가득찬 / invincible: 무적의,이길 수없는 / iota:아주 적은 양   * fertiize: 비옥하게하다 / hover:배회하다 / gruff: 쉰, 거친, 난폭한 / aggravated:짜증난,악화된

The boys stare at the faces in the cabinet in silence.

15.INT.SCHOOL STEPS - DAY

The boys emerge from the building, loaded down with numerous books.

PITTS : That was weird.

NEIL : But different.

KNOX : Spooky if you ask me.

CAMERON : Think he'll test us on that stuff?

CHARLIE : Oh, come on Cameron, don't you get anything?

CAMERON : What? What?

Charlie scoffs.

16.INT.LOCKER ROOM - EVENING

A coach sticks his head around the corner into the room.

COACH : Let's go, boys, hustle up in here. That means you, Dalton.

Meeks emerges from showers, drying himself off.

MEEKS : Alight, who's up for a trig study group tonight, guys?

PITTS : Me.

NEIL : Me.

CHARLIE : (still annoyed by what the coach said) What?

KNOX : I can't make it, guys. I have to have dinner at the Danburry's house.

PITTS : The Danburry's? Who are the Danburry's?

*weird: 이상한 / spooky:괴상한,무서운 / hustle:재촉하다, 서두르게하다 / make it:성공하다.처리하다

CAMERON : Big alumnus. How'd you swing that?

KNOX : Firends of my Dad's. They are probably in their nineties or somgthing.

CHARLIE : Ooh!

KNOX : Hey. Sounds great, doesn't it?

NEIL : Anything's better than Hell-ton hash.

CHARLIE : I'll second that.

KNOX : Yeah, we'll see.

Neil approaches Todd. who's been sitting by the window staring down at the floor. Neil snaps his fingers to get Todd's attention.

NEIL : Hey! You coming to the study group tonight?

TODD : Uh, no, no I, uh, I've got some history I wanna do.

17.INT.TODD'S ROOM-EVENING

Todd is seated at his desk. He scrawls "SIEZE THE DAY" across a blank page of his notebook. He looks at it for a few moments before crumpling it up and opening up his Chemistry book.

18.INT.ENTRANCEWAY-NIGHT

Hager comes down the stairs. Knox is looking at one of the old class photos on the walls.

HAGER : Ready, Overstreet?

Knox reluctantly follows after Dr.Hager

KNOX : Ready to go, sir.

*alumnus: 대학의 남자 동창생. alumna: 여자 졸업생,alumi:졸업생들/ swing: 좌우하다.잘 처리하다=arrange / hash:다진고기요리 / second:지지하다.찬성하다=endorse,promote / scrawl:,낙서하다

19.EXT.ROAD-NIGHT

The car leaves Welton and drives towards the Danburry's house.

20.EXT.DANBURRY'S HOUSE - NIGHT

The doorbell rings.

MRS.DANBURRY : (VO) Chet, can you get that?

CHET : (VO) I can't, mom.

CHRIS : (VO) I'll get it.

Chris opens the door. As she does, Knox stares at her as if in a daze.

CHRIS : Can I help you?

Knox manages to break ou of her daze.

KNOX : Hi, Knox Overstreet. Uh, Dr.Hager.

CHRIS : Hi.

KNOX : That is the Danburry's, right?

CHRIS : Are you here to see Chet?

KNOX : Mrs.Danburry?

Chris begins to laugh as Mrs.Danburry arrives behind her.

CHRIS : (laughing) NO.

MRS.DANBURRY : Sorry. Thank you, Chris. I'm Mrs.Danburry. You must be Knox.

KNOX : Yes.

MRS.DANBURRY : (to Dr.Hager) Back by nine. (to Knox) Please come on in.

*manage:그럭저럭(어떻게든)하다 / daze:현혹,멍하고 얼떨떨한상태 / Can you get(닿다) that? 나가볼래?

CHET : (VO) Chris, come on, what are you doing?

CHRIS : Chet, I'm coming.

MR.DANBURRY : Knox. How are you? Joe Danburry.

KNOX : Nice to meet you, sir.

MR.DANBURRY : Well he's the spitting image of his father, isn't he? How is he? Come on in.

CHET : (VO) CHRIS.

KNOX : He's great. He just did a big case for GM.

CHRIS : (VO) I'm coming.

MR.DANBURRY : I know where you're headed, like father like son, huh?

Mr.Danburry pats Knox on the back, leading him into another room. Knox takes another look up the stair as Chris runs up/

21.INT.STUDENT LOUNGE-NIGHT

Several boys are in the student lounge. Some are playing cards, darts, chess, the guitar. Other are talking and studying.

BOY1 : Ooh, pshcho.

BOY2 : Yes! To Queen-Six.

BOY1 : Another game?

BOY3 : What do you mean?

BOY4 : Duh!

CAMERON : Just replace these numbers here with "x" for "x" and "y."

NEIL : Of course.
